Abstract:This chapter consists of two chapters of an original historical novel, as yet untitled, together with a tentative synopsis and the remainder of the work. The book is based upon the life of Dona Gracia Mendesia (1516-1569), a spirited Jewish woman who tirelessly fought against the Portuguese Inquisition and aided its victims. Factual details about her early life are limited to a few names and dates, therefore much of these two chapters is fictional; but wherever I have created incidents it has been with great care to remain within the area of probability. All of the account of the persecutions of the exiled Jews are taken from historical sources.
