Abstract
Daggers of light slice through leaves as if trying to pierce me, but I am too fast for them. I am alone in my mind. I cut through the bamboo forest, grab roots and thick stalks for support as I hoist myself up the slope. Tunnels of branches and leaves swallow me up in their darkness as I climb higher. I slip but grab at any root that comes to hand. I am nothing but a speck on this mass of boulders. The steep sides of the mountain and the edge of the cliff dare me to go further. I pray to the akua to protect me and allow me passage to their sacred pools. Over the side of the cliff I see my cul-de-sac far below. I look to the path ahead of me. The winds whip through hair, punishing cheeks and eyes; they know my secrets and howl their discontent.
