Abstract
Charles Pierre Baudelaire, the famed French poet of the past, was fa shioned in the literary world of the nineteenth century, handed down from fa ther to son, and persists even todayo Within the century that has elapsed, Baudelaire's reputation as an alien to French society has undergone a complete reverseo A hundred years ago, alienation of the minority became a modern novelty amidst the majority who were captivated by optimism and materialismo. When one of his collections of poems appeared for the first time, the main contemporary critics declared that his place in public esteem would be shat tered for he had dared to face his critics openly and would only be a dead sea fruit in contemporary literatureo His condemned pieces of literature brought about much abuse and slandero They had been described as corrupt and foul poetry of the slaughter-and charnel-houseo The public remained uncon scious of Baudelaire's literary worth and firmly rooted in their prejudices against him. The mere mention of his name brought about "... visions of Satanism, Black Masses, orgiastic revelry, and the unnatural practices of a decadent civilisation. He lived in an age of extreme economic individualism, rampant individualism, and the eruption of great cities bringing about urban civilization and the emergence of the new and aggressive middle-class, so called bourgeoisieo In such a materialistic age as this which believed in comfort and prosperity, he rejected satisfaction with such superficial ideals.
