Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to recount some of those elements that have made China unique. Learning what forces have shaped and influenced this teeming land of more than 700 million people throughout their long his tory is fascinating study. China's way of life has been molded by a myriad of things through the ages, certainly too numerous to cover in this paper, but there are cer tain elements which have been present in her culture since the beginning of time and which have directed her people and made them what they are. These elements are her philosphy, her government, her system of education, and her geography. These form the tapestry of Chinese life into which the civilization that is uniquely Chinese has woven itself. Together, they are the legacy of her past.
