|Abstract:||This three-part dissertation study aims to understand the way that school connectedness develops in the Personal Transition Plan/Leadership (PTP/L) course, and its implications for violence prevention, to assist Kailua High School in strengthening the course and to deepen our understanding of the potential influence of school connectedness on youth outcomes.|
School connectedness is a multidimensional construct that includes school involvement, academic motivation, school attachment, teacher support, and peer relations. Students who have high levels of school connectedness are less likely to hold attitudes condoning violent behaviors. These findings suggest that the PTP/L course may be a promising strategy to enhance school connectedness and positive youth outcomes. More research is needed to determine whether the findings apply to different Asian and Pacific Islander groups and to assess the long-term impacts of the course. Because of mounting evidence that school connectedness can foster positive youth outcomes, more efforts should be made to develop and evaluate strategies that promote school connectedness.
