|Abstract:||In this study, improved material property correlations are developed for the pure substances methanol and ethanol as well as mixtures of alcohol and water. Previously, a linear, ideal mixing rule was used for the material properties of a binary methanol/water mixture. This approach leads to error in property values of up to 50% for certain properties. Improved correlations have reduced errors in mixture property predictions to 3-8%. These new correlations are then used in the three-dimensional numerical simulation of single-phase heat transfer characteristics of binary methanol-water mixtures in a micro-channel heat sink which contains an array of 22 micro-channels with 240μm x 630μm cross-section. Pure water, pure methanol, and five methanol-water mixtures with methanol molar fraction of 16%, 36%, 50%, 63% and 82% were simulated. Numerical results are then validated against experimental data previously obtained by Chun Ka Kwok. Key parametric trends are identified and discussed. Numerical predictions and experimental data are in good agreement with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.87%.|
