Mankon Marriage Customs, Narrated by Vanda Koko. (Full Story)

Thank you Anna. I’m going to tell you how marriage is done in Mankon. When a marriage is to be done in Mankon, it is done in four steps.

2.

If a man finds a woman he loves, he approaches the lady’s family and says, “I love your daughter. I want to marry your daughter.”

3.

If the lady’s people like the man, they’ll be like “okay,” then they will call their daughter and ask “do you know this man?”

4.

If the lady accepts, then they ask the man to come back with his people, so he can come back after three days with his family. When the people come, now the two families do what is called an introduction.

5.

When the introduction is done, they now wait for about three to four weeks, and then head to the council to do a court wedding signed by the mayor.

6.

When the council wedding is done, they now prepare for the church wedding by buying clothes, food, gifts,

7.

and make the announcement known to everyone, both far and near, that their church wedding will be in three weeks.

8.

Then everyone prepares by shopping for clothes and food, followed by going to church to participate in the wedding. When they’re done with church, everyone now goes home to eat and feast.

9.

Everybody is feasting, everybody is feasting with **~the bride~**, they get gifts for the couple and offer it to the wife. The husband now takes his **~bride~** home. [Note: we have put stars and pink text for the word “məŋgən” because it’s a very special, exciting, and happy word for a bride.]

10.

I thank you all.
