Tibetan Lhasa Dialect

BACKGROUND


Hello, my name is Dikyi Dopta. I am a graduate student in the Sociology Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I am going to introduce you to the Lhasa dialect called Shesa.

Who speaks the language?


     The Lhasa Dialect (Shesa) is spoken by the upperclass Tibetan people living in downtown Lhasa. It is a socially prestigious dialect, spoken by the educated. Shesa's writing system is based on the Tibetan written language, and is an official language of the upperclass. There are three main dialects of Tibetan which are the U-TSANG dialect, KHAM dialect and AMDO dialect. The Lhasa dialect (Shesa) is a U-TSANG dialect.

Where is Tibet?
     Tibet is located in south-west China, north of the Himalayan Mountains. The average altitude of the Tibetan Plateau is 4500 meters high from sea level.



Where is Lhasa?
     Lhasa is located in the south-east of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Lhasa is the capital city of TAR.
