Abstract
"An area of approximately 80 square miles adjacent to the East Rift Zone of Kilauea Volcano on the Island of Hawaii is presently considered to be a prime target for future development of a geothermal industry, The potential development area is sparsely populated and large tracts are pristine forest. The Kilauea East Rift zone is, however, volcanically active and naturally emits substantial quantities of pollutants normally associated with industrial development. It has, therefore, been recommended that a pre-development environmental baseline survey be conducted within the potential geothermal area in order to assess existing levels of environmentally hazardous compounds and substances, The data acquired during this survey will be used both for setting emission standards for future development in this area and for monitoring such emissions as development proceeds."
