Founded in 1907 by Dr. Joseph Rock, the University of Hawaii's herbarium incorporates Lyon Arboretum specimens, together with scientific specimens of leading botanical researchers in the Pacific basin. For more than 100 years, the collection of 50,000 dried plant specimens has been a focal point for teaching, training, and education on the flora of Hawai'i and the Pacific Islands. The herbarium collects, houses, and maintains voucher plant specimens that reflect the teaching and research efforts of university faculty, staff, and students. In 2007, the Herbarium established the Pacific Island Consortia of Herbaria (PIRCH), a collaborative specimen data sharing network between the University of Guam, the Lyon Arboretum, and Hawai'i Community College.
