UH First-Year Writing Symposium

Logo

In the Spring of 2017 UH Mānoa hosted the first ever multi-campus, collaborative conference exclusively on the teaching of first-year writing in Hawai`i. It featured presenters and attendees from UH Mānoa, Hilo, Hawai`i CC, Leeward, Kapi`olani, Windward, West O`ahu, Kauai, and Honolulu. The initial conference was started by the FYW directors at UHM but grew far beyond the UHM campus as all FYW departments were invited to join together to discuss how teachers and administrators view, interpret, and re-imagine the FYW Hallmarks across the UH system. Also, the first conference not only featured the work of teachers and administrators and tutors from across Hawai`i, but the planning committee for the initial event represented several different campuses, as well. Thus, the UH FYW Symposium was truly a collaborative and diverse and creative effort. This is exactly as it was intended to be, and it truly represents the very nature of FYW instruction and the extensive body of FYW facilitators that exists across our great islands.

This site is intended as a repository for all of the amazing talks and materials that were presented at the first initial symposium. Furthermore, it is intended to be the location where materials for all future FYW Symposium materials will also be housed. Materials are meant to be shared among UH system instructors, administrators, and staff and can also be shared outside the system as well as this site is an open-access site and materials have been shared freely by participating presenters.

To navigate the site, click on the desired symposium collection (listed by year). Then, you will be able to peruse through the conference program and sub-collections broken down by symposium panels, which are subsequently listed chronologically in the order they were presented during the conference and with appropriate thematic titles.

May you find inspiration and joy here, as it is hoped that this site serves as a digital extension and representation of the dedicated, inspiring, and collaborative work of FYW facilitators across the UH system for many years to come.
