dc.description.abstract The City and County of Honolulu (CCH) and the Oahu Sugar Company (OSC) have entered into a long-term agreement to use sewage effluent to irrigate sugar cane. Briefly, the objective of this monitoring program is to establish the quality of the sewage effluent used for irrigation and the quality of the groundwater, down gradient of the designated sugar cane fields. The goal of this study is to determine whether the quality of the groundwater will show signs of contamination with wastewater components, especially human enteric viruses. The baseline quality of the 5 selected groundwater sources and the Mililani sewage effluent with respect to indicator bacteria, human enteric viruses, chemical, metals and pesticides has been established. The data collected indicate the high quality of these groundwater sources. The first round of groundwater samples taken approximately 5 months after sewage irrigation of sugar cane had begun do not show any difference in the quality of the groundwater. en_US
