Genre: Myth/legend of origin. Title: Igo Enga. Igo Enga, a Palu'e folk tale/legend narrated by Paula Paji (born c. 1930s). Recorded by SD (directly with the Zoom HN4 I think) in a room in her home, the most prominent one in kampong Ndeo, morning 14 Feb 2014, one of the first recordings of folk tales on Palu'e, and we made three tales in one session. Igo Enga is a myth or legend that is also known in different versions on Flores, particularly Larantuka, and the relationship between the two regions is honoured in the story. Igo and Enga are brothers, who separate after a quarrel, one leaving for Larantuka, the other staying on Palu'e. The names Igo and Enga are in use on Palu'e in seaside communities. The root of the quarrel, a minor one, is the fishhook Enga loses at sea while fishing, Igo wants it back. Enga goes to look for it, below the sea, there are people and a dying old man (fish) and Enga "cures him", cuts him up to take out the hook that was stuck in him (although not explicitly mentioned). This motif is known also from Timor (see Davd Hicks 2020). In the end Igo feels ashamed and goes to live in Larantuka.
