Genre: Folk tale/fairy tale. Title: Kondi, Mbakorao no'o Mbu Riti (Kondi, Mbakorao and Mbu Riti). Lengu Nandene (approx. 1916-2017), kampong Mata Mere, tells Kondi, Mbakorao no'o Mbu Riti, a triangular drama where Mbakorao wants to be the first or the only wife. Mbakorao eats the household things that Kondi (the husband) has bought, so that she will look pregnant. When Mbu Riti gets pregnant she accuses Mbu Riti for having eaten the things she has swallowed. Mbakorao invites Mbu Riti into the wild somewhere and destroys her feet and and hands, leaving her sitting under a rock. Then Mbu Riti has a child, a son, who is constantly crying for a toy (kodhi, BI. gasing), until he gets it. Later a grandparent teaches him how to heal his mother with ancestral magic. Healed, Mbu Riti makes her son a kodhi that he plays with everywhere, until the house of his father (whom he does not know). Through this, Kondi meets Mbu Riti again and invites her home. After that he invites Mbakorao to the forest, tells her to climb a tree, which he then fells. Mbakorao falls to the ground and dies, and all the things she had devoured lay scattered everywhere. Almost the same tale is told by Toji Kanda, with the title Nusa Tale no’o Mbu Ritu. // One day Meti remembered Lengu Nande, a great grandmother next door, near 100 years of age (born c. 1916), who had once been able to tell tales and was known to be skilled in togo (tandak), dance with lyrics, with her husband. Meti brought her over, and asked her, which was difficult because Lengu is almost deaf. It turned out that she remembered stories very well, surprisingly fluent, and she seemed to enjoy telling tales. So we decided to try recording the next day. That way she had time to remember during the night we thought. Lengu had learned from Nua Ngajine and her parents. Recorded by SD 22 December 2014 in the house of Bapak Wilhelminus Ware dan Ibu Yuliana Longge, kampong Mata Mere. With Maria Meti, who helped to arrange the recording; washed Lengu and dressed her with sarong and batik in the early morning. I brought sirih pinang, a requirement, and a small bottle of arak, knowing that old Bapak Wora and others would be there as well in the morning. Lengu told the tales like pressing the button on a tape player, excellent. I set the record level quite high, a little too high, thinking it would be advantageous in this case (because of her age, physical condition (no teeth). Lengu seemed perplexed over the recorder: “What is it? Will my voice be out there? And you will bring it to your country?” Wora and Meti's young brother Mboe Erixon sat through most of the session. There was a flock of children outside of the bamboo plated wall and two windows, covered with a piece of cloth, peeking in, disturbing a little bit.
