Writing Assignment Used for This Interview


Students will pitch story ideas they are interested in developing. Participants in the story conferences will critique the story ideas to assist in the editorial process. Students will develop their story ideas into video stories for the TV magazine and extended written stories for the website.

    Brief excerpt from interview: Most of my stories . . . were centered around things in this University . . . I did a lot of research about how the food came to Hawaiʻi and how it evolved in Hawaiʻi . . . This is learning about modern Hawaiʻi and why things are the way they are . . . Breaking apart stereotypes and really digging down into what the culture or the people . . . where those influences come from . . . It also helps you differentiate between what Native Hawaiians had and what we have now.

    Brief excerpt from interview: Coming here and writing about things in Hawaiʻi . . . I struggle with finding my place within the culture and not knowing about the history and traditions . . . wanting to be sensitive to that . . . Not, maybe, having the strongest voice because of a reluctance to own it . . . Taking classes in Ethnic Studies in Hawaiʻi, History . . . a lot of my English classes we dealt with literatures based in the Pacific ocean region . . . just being here and talking to people has been the greatest help to me in understanding what I can write about . . . [Hawaiʻi-Asia-Pacific focus course] is helping me understand where I am geographically, and the past, and why things are the way that they are . . . it's super important as a journalist in Hawaiʻi to know all that.

    Brief excerpt from interview: Pretty much 100% success for me, for my writing, would be in how the reader accepts it . . . The better quality it is, the more readership . . . Getting a good view of the topics . . . really diving into the topics and trying to understand what I'm talking about.
