Course Description


This course is an introduction to contemporary planning practice. The primary objective of the course is to provide an understanding of the context within which urban planning emerged, the different planning approaches, and the role played by planners. To understand why we plan, how we planned, and what tools we use as planners to shape neighborhoods, cities, and regions, we will focus on the different subfields of planning such as land use, transportation, housing, community and economic development, environment and sustainability, smart growth, and urban design. The course also seeks to inspire interest in the profession of urban and regional planning for those who are concerned about the future of our cities.


Learning Goals

i) Understand the history and context for urban planning, the different issues and approaches in planning practice, and the role played by planners; ii) Develop critical and creative thinking skills; and iii) Develop strong written and oral communication skills.
