Abstract
The Importance of the Protestant Ethic in the development of modern western culture has been debated upon extensively over the last few decades and volumes have appeared on the subject since the publication of Max Weber's work, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (1904). However, the majority of scholars have limited their research primarily to the relationship between religion and the economic and social and political life of western culture in general. The result has been a shortage of information dealing specifically with the relationship between religion and American political life. As a dominant theme in United States history, the Protestant Tradition has played a vital role in the development of American Institutions, values and philosophy. It has manifested itself in the system of checks and balances of the Constitution of 1787; in moralistic slogans such as "Manifest Destiny", "no compromise with principle" and "self-determination"; and in the very character of the American people. It has also played an important part in the shaping of Presidential policies that have had tremendous impact in American society and the world. Yet despite the relative significance of the Protestant Tradition in American politics, in particular, little information dealing with this relationship has been documented. The following paper, then, will be devoted to the examination of manifestations of the Protestant Ethic in the policies of President Dwight David Eisenhower, in an effort to assess how active a role the Ethic played in the policy-making of the Eisenhower years.
