Abstract
The notion of molecules of the same atomic composition having different spatial arrangements was first proposed by Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff in 1874. Although the idea was scoffed at first, its validity became apparent with the formulation of the valence bond theory by G. N. Lewis and Wolfgang Pauli. In recent years, it has been found that the changes in molecular shape and spatial arrangement is responsible for most biological activities. Thus, it is not surprising that moelcular isomerization has been found to be the basis of vision throughout the animal kindom.
