Abstract
Man has long been interested in bioluminescence, the production of light by living organisms. Probably the first written reference to a luminous animal is found among The Thirteen Classics of China. In one of these, which dates from about 1500-1000 B.C., the words " i-yao hsiao-hsing" are found. This has been translated as meaning: "Blowing intermittently are the fireflies" (1).
