Abstract
Ward woke when he heard Mother making her bed. Her room was adjacent to his. On his back, he pulled the covers up to his chin and thought, today is the day I'm going to tell her. Today is the day that is going to break my pattern. Today, he thought, I'll be as much in harmony with life as a whale is with the sea. He pictured Mother bending over the bedspread, her long legs straight, smoothing the wrinkles of the spread, especially the half of the bed where Father slept. Father wasn't home. Father went to work at six. Mother went to work at nine. Father left earlier than usual this morning because Ward and Father had had an affair last night. It hadn't been much of a tournament.
