Abstract
I began trying to isolate the element of style in the stories of Isak Dinesen (the pan name of Danish Baroness Karen Blixen, 1885-1962). I wanted to describe her style as part of the genre of the Gothic novel. This alrge topic set me back, and I came to think of her style as strongly individual, egocentric, but not anyone's "Gothic". I rephrased my problem as, "What is 'Dinesen' about Dinsen?" Here soon enough I abandoned all other approaches and set out to work with irony alone. I found a good mine of it in the opening story of her first published collection.
