Abstract
The binding of my copy of James Joyce's Ulysses (1922) is quite broken. This was caused not by my considerable reading and rereading of the work, but simply because I kept throwing it on the floor... at the wall... or whatever might happen to be in the path of its trajectory. I distinctly remember getting to the "Proteus" chapter one evening and the "ineluctable modality of the visible."
