Phonological Aspects of English Loanwords in the Japanese Language

Abstract

When the structure of a language is changed by importation of words or grammatical patterns from another dialect of the language or from another language, these imported features are said to be borrowed. Cultural borrowing occurs when two cultures come into contact and new linguistic items are introduced from culture to the other. There are several types of borrowing - loanwords, loanblends, and loanshifts; but we are specifically concerned with loanwords, those single entities which are taken over directly by the borrowing language.
