Abstract: Writing a sociological and anthropological history of the island of Niihau appealed to me. Writing a fact ual chronological history also appealed to me. I decided on the latter because of restraints in available written material, restraints in oral history, time and respect for the wishes of the Robinson family, the owners of Niihau. Granted, the social implications if explored, would provide color and interest within this thesis. However, difficult ethical and fundamental problems of private rights and ownership, other peoples loyalty to this idea; versus complete unbinding personal freedoms, arose. After consider able contemplation of these values and an indepth under standing of these two positions I have tried to combat these values with much self conflict. I have tried to re solve some of the problems and are presented in this thesis.
