Abstract
This study explores the experiences of three international students who are in the process of discovering academic genre expectations and appropriating academic writing conventions. The data was obtained through student interviews and writing tutorial sessions. The data analysis revealed that sometimes EAP writing courses may not succeed in providing metatextual awareness of genre expectations of their specific fields of study. The discussion suggests how EAP courses can support ESL learners gaining the metalinguistic awareness and proposes possibilities for hybrid forms of academic literacy practices.
