Abstract: This paper proposes a task-based approach to developing the discussion skills of ESL students’ listening/speaking class, dealing mostly with the methodological considerations for task-based syllabus and lesson designs. It shows one example of how tasks can be used to build up the syllabus and lessons in developing students’ discussion skills. It also notes that there will be alternative work plans and configurations in taking the same task-based approach, depending on the classification and sequence of the discussion sub-task types and decisions for lesson designing.
