dc.description.abstract This paper reports on the process of developing vocabulary test items to be included in English Language Institute (ELI) reading placement test. In developing test items for the ELI Vocabulary Test, a subset of reading test, several factors are considered. First, efforts have been made to select items that would give abundant data on students’ proficiency, and this was achieved via multiple-choice, context-free items that would minimize the amount of time to finish the test, and therefore maximize the amount of vocabulary that could be tested. Also, selection of vocabulary were based on its frequency (and thereby difficulty) to determine students’ range of vocabulary. Nevertheless, the validity of items are not clear yet, thus needs to be tested. en_US
