dc.description.abstract People have a habit of forgetting or ignoring the past when seeking the future. Yet without the knowledge and traditions of the past, there is no firm foundation to create a grand new future. This thesis exhibition of nine oil paintings of still-life subject matter (November 28 - December 3,2004) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's Commons Gallery sought to remind us of our recent past in a manner that provided a cautionary guide to the future. Contemporary American news headlines were the subject matter for these nine paintings. Events from the news accounts were depicted through the use of still-life objects. Following the rich history of still-life paintings, each item within the composition symbolized an element of the narrative. It was through the allegorical use of objects that the complete tale was told. en_US
