|Abstract:||This thesis identifies and discusses aspects of the underground rock music scene formed after the mid-1990s in the Shinchon and Hongik University area of western Seoul, Korea. Although initially the Korean underground rock music was marginalized outside the mainstream of Korean popular music, its audience has gradually increased. In the 2000s, the scene is lively, active, and energetic. The study details how this Korean underground rock music culture has developed as a subculture (Hebdige) through the processes of globalization and localization (Appadurai) by examining first how the underground rock music culture has been influenced by the Western countries, including the U.S., and then how this culture creates its own social significances.|
